Indian Super League (ISL) 3 season has kicked off after a much-hyped multi-channel promotion campaign with the usual suspects (Bollywood celebrities and Mrs.Nita Ambani) and an opening ceremony to match the promotional hype.
ISL test this season
This season will be a testing season for ISL in terms of television viewership, stadium attendance and overall attractiveness of the league. ISL is known for having international players who are well past their performance age and diminishing viewers in the first few days of the league kickoff.
My prediction for the new season is that it may struggle to keep up with the viewership number compared to last season, especially with international viewers. It is rumoured that currently in some part of the west the ISL broadcast partners do not have promotion budgets, so the data that transpires post ISL 3 will be interesting.
Is it fair to compare ISL vs China’s footballing revolution?
Even though ISL has underlined its agenda to develop football it will always be compared to what China is doing to promote football. It’s an unfair comparison because China has taken a completely different approach with contrasting numbers in investment and infrastructure development.
How ISL performed last season?
The numbers shared by the management of the league stack up really well with some impressive statistics showing above par performance in sectors:
- Stadium attendance
- Audience (Television viewership)
- Content consumption
The infographic below highlights ISL’s performance last season. The information is from Star Sport’s ad sales presentation which means it’s validated as its used in pitching to sponsors for the league.
Its certain that IMG-R and AIFF will put in their best efforts to make the league a success this year as well. If their efforts are matched with good quality football on the pitch and if the viewers watch football over the current International cricket tour and other sports leagues will decide the success of the league.
We at sportsnexus will await the post season numbers and compare season 3 with the performance of season 2. Till then ‘Come on India, Let’s Football‘.
